Local school districts receive grants to offer free computer labs and classes

Community Foundation of Greater South Wood County recently made $53,935 in grants to area school districts. The grants help to provide free training and access to computers, Internet, and technology for the general public.

“The increasing need for technical skills is a reality of the 21st century. But not all residents have the knowledge or opportunity to access computers and the Internet,” noted Liz Everson, Director of Knowledge Management & Community Information. “This grant provides residents with free community computer labs and classes.”

Two local school districts received grants: Port Edwards and Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools. These districts serve Rudolph and Port Edwards, two communities without a local library.
“Right now, we have a waiting list for computer skills training classes and the response to open lab nights has been well received,” shared Bryon Kolbeck, Director of Technology for the Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools. “With continued support of the Community Foundation, we will be expanding our classes to continue through the 2012-2013 school year.”

Each district applying for a grant determined that residents need the skills to access new technology without having to commute a great distance. For example, John Edwards Middle School/High School , Rudolph Elementary and Lincoln High School are opening their computer labs after school hours to provide residents additional access.

Funding is provided through the Community Foundation’s Community Grants Fund and work supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. To date, $100,000 has been awarded to 13 local organizations to increases the community’s ability to access and engage with information.
